Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

POSITION/JOB SUMMARY:

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) provides pre-hospital and interfacility patient care and transportation consistent with the Minnesota EMT scope of practice, local protocols, and medical direction. The EMT responds to emergency and non-emergency ambulance calls, provides basic life support (BLS) care, assists with patient assessment and stabilization, and safely transports patients to appropriate medical facilities.

The EMT works collaboratively with other EMS personnel, hospital staff, and public safety agencies to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate patient care. The EMT supports the mission, vision, and values of Johnson Memorial Health Services and promotes high standards of clinical care, safety, and professionalism.

This position will be scheduled as on call duty (pager duty) two weekday shifts per week, six weekends per year, and rotating holidays.

On-call is paid at $5.00 per hour and $6.00 per hour on holidays. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency ambulance calls and provide Basic Life Support care in accordance with Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board standards and service protocols.
  • Perform patient assessments, obtain vital signs, and provide appropriate treatment and monitoring within EMT scope of practice.
  • Safely operate and maintain ambulance vehicles in accordance with state law and organizational policy.
  • Assist with the safe lifting, moving, and transport of patients using appropriate equipment and techniques.
  • Assist higher-level providers (RN, Paramedic, or other licensed personnel) during interfacility transfers when applicable.
  • Complete accurate and timely patient care reports and other required documentation.
  • Maintain readiness of ambulance vehicles, equipment, and supplies including cleaning, restocking, and reporting maintenance issues.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, hospital staff, dispatch, and other emergency responders.
  • Participate in community response efforts and cooperate with law enforcement, fire departments, and other agencies during emergency incidents.
  • Take three (3) call shifts during the week; hours of shifts may vary.
  • Take five (5) eight-hour weekend shifts in a six (6) week period.
  • Attend two (2) department meetings per month, typically held on the first and third Mondays.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to assist when the ambulance service is engaged in interfacility transfers or multiple calls.
  • Maintain professional behavior and contribute positively to the EMS team environment.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities, training, and continuing education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

STANDARD REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Maintains required licensure and completes continuing education necessary for Minnesota EMT relicensure.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of patient rights and maintains an environment that respects patient privacy, dignity, and well-being.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Current Minnesota Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
  • Current National Registry EMT certification or ability to obtain/maintain as required by the service.
  • Current Minnesota driver’s license and acceptable driving record. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association or equivalent.

Preferred

  • Previous EMS or healthcare experience.
  • Experience with rural EMS or interfacility transports.
